La Crosse, Wisconsin – Much colder than normal temperatures will continue across western Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota today and tonight, keeping conditions dry but bitterly cold through Saturday before a gradual warm-up begins.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, daytime highs today will remain in the single digits to teens above zero, while overnight lows are expected to dip into the single digits below zero. These temperatures are well below seasonal averages and may pose challenges for outdoor activities and early-morning travel.

Despite the cold, forecasters say dry weather will dominate through Saturday, limiting snowfall impacts for most of the region. Roads are expected to remain generally clear, though cold pavement temperatures could still allow isolated slick spots, especially during overnight and early morning hours.

The coldest conditions will be felt along major travel corridors such as Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 61, U.S. Highway 53, and Wisconsin Highway 16, where wind exposure may make already low temperatures feel more uncomfortable for motorists and commuters.

A warming trend is forecast to begin Saturday, with highs climbing into the low to mid-20s by Sunday. Temperatures are expected to continue moderating into next week, with highs reaching the upper 20s to near 30 degrees by mid to late week, returning closer to normal for late January and early February.

The next opportunity for precipitation arrives Sunday, when light snow is possible. However, the National Weather Service notes that impacts are expected to be minimal, with little to no accumulation anticipated at this time.

Residents are encouraged to continue practicing cold-weather safety, including dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and bringing pets indoors overnight. Drivers should ensure vehicles are winter-ready, especially during the coldest morning hours.

Students, commuters, and outdoor workers across the Coulee Region should remain aware of lingering cold conditions through Saturday before more seasonable temperatures return.
