Tennessee – Headlights reflect off a dull glaze on neighborhood streets this morning as cold air locks in across the Mid-South. Slush hardened before dawn, and what looks wet can turn slick in seconds. The chill settles deep, making even short trips outside feel punishing.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through Sunday midday. Wind chills may dip as low as 5 degrees below zero across West Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, and North Mississippi. A Special Weather Statement warns that black ice remains a serious concern as melting refreezes quickly after sunset.

Road crews have treated major routes, but secondary roads remain hazardous in spots. Drivers should expect limited traction on bridges, overpasses, and shaded streets. Travel on less-traveled roads may be nearly impossible at times, especially early and late in the day. Keep extra distance and avoid non-essential trips if possible.

Daytime temperatures struggle today, topping out near freezing before dropping again tonight. Saturday stays cold, with highs in the mid-20s and wind chills near zero. Sunshine helps Sunday, but temperatures only recover into the low 30s, leaving refreeze risks each evening.

A noticeable shift arrives early next week. Monday turns milder, with highs pushing into the upper 40s. By Tuesday, temperatures reach the low 50s, and rain chances increase. With frozen ground still in play, water may pool before draining, raising renewed slick spots after dark.

This prolonged cold ties into a broader Arctic blast gripping much of the eastern U.S., following recent deadly cold snaps across the South. Dress in layers, protect pets and pipes, and check on neighbors who may need help. Conditions may evolve quickly as February approaches.
