Kentucky – Crisp air bites hard across western Kentucky this morning as headlights cut through a pale glow and frost clings to windshields. Breath fogs instantly, and even brief trips outside feel punishing as Arctic air presses in. Pavement looks dry in spots, but refreezing moisture creates slick patches that drivers may not see until it’s too late.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through midday Saturday. Wind chills are dropping as low as 10 degrees below zero across western Kentucky, southern Illinois, and southwest Indiana. Prolonged exposure could lead to frostbite or hypothermia if precautions aren’t taken.
Flurries may drift through the region at times, especially this morning and again before Saturday afternoon. Accumulation should stay light, but even a dusting can worsen travel when temperatures hover in the teens. Gusty north winds add to the bite, keeping apparent temperatures well below actual readings.
By Sunday, sunshine returns and temperatures slowly rebound into the upper 20s. Calmer winds will help, though shaded roads may stay icy. Early next week brings a noticeable shift. Highs climb toward the upper 30s and lower 40s, and a rain chance arrives by Tuesday. With frozen ground still in place, melting followed by evening cooling could refreeze quickly.
This cold snap reflects a larger pattern gripping much of the eastern U.S., with Arctic air pushing south and the Great Lakes heavily iced over. Dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and allow extra stopping distance on area roads. Conditions may change quickly as February approaches.
