Cleveland, Ohio – Bitter cold conditions are expected to settle across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania beginning Friday evening, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory as dangerously low wind chills and near-record temperatures develop overnight into Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Saturday for all of northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. Wind chill values are expected to fall between 10 below and 25 below zero, with the coldest conditions occurring during the pre-dawn hours Saturday.
Forecasters say actual air temperatures will drop sharply overnight, with low temperatures occurring around daybreak Saturday. Some locations, particularly along and south of U.S. Route 30, may approach near-record cold for late January.
The most hazardous conditions are expected near major transportation corridors including Interstate 90, Interstate 80, Interstate 76, and U.S. Route 30, where exposure to the cold could become dangerous in a short amount of time. The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin under these conditions.
While widespread snow or ice is not the primary concern, the extreme cold itself poses a serious risk to people, pets, and infrastructure. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and ensure pets are brought indoors.
Homeowners should take steps to prevent frozen pipes by insulating exposed plumbing and allowing faucets to drip if necessary. Those using alternative heating sources are advised to do so safely and ensure proper ventilation.
Students, early-morning workers, and commuters traveling Saturday morning should prepare for extreme cold, especially while waiting outdoors or dealing with vehicle issues.
Temperatures are expected to gradually recover later Saturday as the advisory expires, though cold conditions will persist into the weekend. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official forecasts for any updates or extensions to cold weather alerts.
