Oklahoma – Cold air cuts sharply across central Oklahoma this morning, rattling bare branches and biting exposed skin within minutes. Even simple tasks feel harder as Oklahoma City wakes under a dangerous winter chill that has prompted a Cold Weather Advisory.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, temperatures hovered in the low 20s early, while north winds pushed wind chills down near 10 degrees below zero in parts of the metro. Those values can cause frostbite quickly without proper protection, especially for anyone outside for extended periods.
Sunshine does little to help today. Afternoon highs remain stuck in the 30s, and the wind keeps conditions feeling far colder than the thermometer suggests. Travel remains mostly dry, but the cold itself becomes the hazard. Vehicles take longer to warm, batteries weaken, and exposed pipes remain vulnerable across Oklahoma City, Norman, and surrounding communities.
Another surge of dangerous cold arrives tonight into early Saturday morning. Wind chills again dip below zero, keeping the advisory in effect through late morning. A few flurries may pass through, but the bigger risk stays focused on prolonged exposure and hypothermia.
By Saturday afternoon, conditions slowly improve. Winds ease, and highs climb into the mid-20s. Sunday finally brings noticeable relief, with sunshine and temperatures reaching the mid-40s. That warming continues into early next week as highs push into the 50s by Monday.
Even with the warm-up ahead, the next several hours remain critical. Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors when possible. Bring pets inside and check on neighbors who may need help staying warm.
Nationally, Arctic air continues pressing south and east, and changes may come quickly as February begins.
