Lynchburg, Virginia – Snow and gusty winds are expected to make travel hazardous across portions of central and south central Virginia beginning Friday afternoon, with slick roads lingering into early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Friday afternoon through early Sunday for Botetourt, Bedford, Amherst, Campbell, Appomattox, and Buckingham counties. Snowfall totals between 3 and 5 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph. Conditions are likely to deteriorate during the Friday evening commute as snow begins to accumulate on untreated roads.
Communities including Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, and Fincastle are expected to see snow-covered roadways develop by late afternoon. Bridges and elevated surfaces may become slick first, especially along U.S. Route 460, U.S. 29, and sections of Route 501. Gusty winds could lead to areas of blowing snow, reducing visibility at times.
Farther west, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for Monroe and Summers counties in southern West Virginia, where 2 to 4 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 45 mph are expected through Sunday afternoon. Snow and gusty winds may bring down tree limbs and create sporadic travel issues on secondary roads.
Drivers are urged to slow down, avoid unnecessary travel if possible, and monitor road conditions through 511 services. Advisories remain in effect into Sunday morning, and lingering slick spots are likely even after snowfall tapers off.
