Michigan — Cold air bites hard across southeast Michigan this morning, stiffening fingers and turning breath into thick clouds. Snow dusts lawns lightly, but the real danger is the cold settling in fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, wind chills between 10 and 15 degrees below zero are expected across metro Detroit. Light flurries may continue at times, though accumulations stay under half an inch. The cold remains the primary threat.

Early temperatures hover near 5 degrees, and winds keep it feeling far colder. Roads along I-75, I-94, and surface streets appear mostly dry, but shaded areas and bridges can refreeze quickly. Flash freezing becomes a concern anytime snow melts during daylight.

Today brings some sunshine, yet highs reach only near 13 degrees. Wind chills remain below zero through much of the day. Saturday improves slightly, with highs near 19 degrees, but the cold still limits melting.

Sunday turns bright but stays bitter. Highs reach only 22 degrees, and lows dip back near 5 degrees Sunday night. Any untreated roads could stay slick well into the morning hours.

This prolonged cold connects to a larger Arctic blast stretching across the eastern United States. The Great Lakes are nearly 50 percent frozen, allowing cold air to flow freely into Michigan and remain locked in place. That pattern keeps winter firmly in control.

By Monday, clouds increase and snow chances return by afternoon. Even light snow could impact travel due to cold pavement. Another round of snow is possible midweek as temperatures remain below seasonal averages.

Residents should limit time outdoors, dress in layers, protect exposed skin, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Pets should stay indoors during the coldest periods.
