Huntsville, AL – A dangerous blast of Arctic air is expected to grip North Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee this weekend, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season and potentially hazardous conditions for residents.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight Friday night through noon Sunday, with overnight low temperatures expected to plunge between 10 and 17 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind chills could fall as low as -5 degrees, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone outdoors for extended periods.
Forecasters say daytime highs on Saturday may struggle to climb out of the teens and lower 20s, making it difficult for temperatures to recover even during peak daylight hours. The cold air mass will impact communities across Madison, Limestone, Morgan, Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, and Cullman counties, as well as nearby areas of southern Middle Tennessee, including Lincoln and Franklin counties near the Tennessee state line.
The National Weather Service is urging residents to prioritize the “four P’s” of winter safety during the prolonged cold snap. That includes checking on people, especially elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat; bringing pets indoors; protecting plants by covering or moving them inside; and safeguarding pipes by dripping faucets and opening cabinet doors to prevent freezing and costly damage.
Officials warn that even brief exposure to extreme wind chills can be dangerous, particularly overnight and during early morning hours. Residents are encouraged to dress in multiple layers and limit time outdoors whenever possible.
Weather officials say conditions should gradually improve late Sunday, but residents should continue monitoring forecasts for any updates or additional advisories.
