Atlanta, GA – Residents across north and central Georgia could face dangerous cold conditions this weekend as an Extreme Cold Watch goes into effect Saturday evening, bringing the coldest air of the season and potentially life-threatening wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service in Atlanta, the Extreme Cold Watch is scheduled from 7 p.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Sunday, with wind chill values expected to drop as low as -5°F to 5°F across much of the region. In the north Georgia mountains, wind chills could feel even colder, ranging from -10°F to -15°F.

The watch includes major population centers such as Atlanta in Fulton County, along with surrounding areas including Gainesville, Rome, Athens, Macon, Columbus, and parts of north Georgia near Chattanooga and Asheville, impacting travel, outdoor activities, and vulnerable populations.

Meteorologists warn that prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to frostbite and hypothermia in a short period of time. Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, and ensure adequate heating indoors.

The National Weather Service also advises taking steps now to protect pets, plants, and plumbing. Pets should be brought indoors, sensitive plants covered, and exposed pipes insulated or allowed to drip to prevent freezing and costly damage.

This cold snap is expected to peak overnight Saturday into early Sunday, with temperatures gradually improving later Sunday afternoon. However, officials caution that conditions may change as the weekend approaches and residents should continue monitoring local forecasts.

Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable heating during the coldest hours.
