Grand Island, Nebraska – Light snow and dangerous cold are expected to impact south-central Nebraska through the weekend, potentially affecting travel along Interstate 80 and several regional highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a trace to just over 1 inch of snow is possible between Thursday and Sunday, with the best chances occurring today through Friday afternoon, followed by another round Saturday evening into Sunday morning. While snowfall totals are expected to remain light, repeated periods of snow could create slick conditions on I-80, U.S. Highway 281, Highway 81, and surrounding roadways.

Forecasters noted that snow potential and accumulation will be greatest toward northern portions of the region, including areas near Grand Island, Aurora, and York. Cities farther south may see more limited accumulation but could still experience brief travel impacts during heavier snow bursts.

Cold temperatures are expected to be a significant concern. The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will drop into the teens and 20s on Friday and Saturday, with overnight lows falling into the negative single digits Friday night. In addition, wind chill values could range from -5 to -20 degrees, increasing the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed for extended periods.

By Sunday, conditions are expected to improve, with highs climbing into the 40s and low 50s, allowing for gradual melting of any remaining snow or ice.

Motorists, especially commuters and weekend travelers along I-80, are encouraged to monitor road conditions, allow extra travel time, and use caution during periods of snowfall and extreme cold. Students and early-morning workers may experience the coldest conditions during Friday morning commutes.
