Detroit, Michigan — Dangerous cold conditions are expected to persist across Southeast Michigan through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, with wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero possible in parts of the region.

Forecasters say very cold wind chills will continue through the end of the week, with the most severe conditions expected Thursday and Friday mornings. Wind chills Thursday morning are forecast to range between 10 and 15 degrees below zero, dropping further by Friday morning, when portions of Southeast Michigan could experience wind chills between 15 and 20 degrees below zero.

During daytime hours, conditions may slightly improve, but wind chills are still expected to remain near or just above zero, offering little relief. Additional rounds of bitter cold are possible into Saturday, when wind chills of 10 to 15 degrees below zero could return for parts of the area.

These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these temperatures. Residents are urged to wear multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outside whenever possible.

Travelers along major corridors including Interstate 75, Interstate 94, Interstate 96, and US-23 should prepare for hazardous conditions, as extreme cold can impact vehicle reliability, reduce reaction times, and worsen conditions on untreated roads.

Pet owners are also reminded to bring animals indoors, and residents should check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals during the cold spell. Ensuring vehicles are winter-ready and keeping emergency supplies on hand is strongly recommended.

While no major snowfall is expected with this cold event, the severity of the temperatures alone makes this a high-impact weather situation for Southeast Michigan.

The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring updated forecasts and potential advisories as conditions evolve through the weekend.
