Blacksburg, Virginia – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of southwest Virginia as forecasters gain confidence in a developing winter storm expected to impact the region from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.

The watch is focused mainly along and south of U.S. Route 460, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible. Snow is expected to begin Friday afternoon, becoming steadier and heavier Friday night into Saturday, before gradually tapering off late Sunday.

Meteorologists warn that gusty winds developing Saturday night into Sunday could lead to blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions. Sub-zero wind chills are also possible behind the storm system, increasing the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed for extended periods.

Communities including Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Pulaski, and areas near I-81 and US-460 should prepare for deteriorating road conditions, especially during the overnight hours and early mornings. Travel could become difficult or dangerous, particularly in higher elevations and open areas where blowing snow is more likely.

The National Weather Service notes that confidence is growing that this system could produce heavy snowfall leading to significant impacts across the region. While exact totals may still change, residents are urged to prepare now by reviewing travel plans, stocking emergency supplies, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready.

Drivers planning to use US-460 or I-81 this weekend should monitor forecasts closely, as conditions may worsen quickly once snow begins. Delays, road closures, and limited visibility are possible.

Officials recommend staying tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, local emergency management, and weather.gov/rnk/winter for updates as the forecast becomes clearer over the next 24–48 hours.

Further advisories or warnings may be issued if confidence continues to increase.
