A significant cold weather event is increasingly likely to impact South Florida late this weekend into early next week, with dangerously low wind chills expected across Miami-Dade County and nearby regions.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Miami, confidence is growing that minimum apparent temperatures — commonly known as wind chills — will drop into the upper 20s to low 30s during the early morning hours on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The coldest conditions are expected inland, with slightly higher values along the immediate coast.

Maps released by the National Weather Service show wind chills near 29°F in Homestead, around 30°F in Miami, and mid-20s possible north of the county line, especially near interior and agricultural areas. Portions of the I-95 corridor, US-1, and I-75 may experience freezing or near-freezing conditions during the pre-dawn commute.

The coldest morning currently appears to be Monday, when inland wind chills could briefly dip into the mid-20s, especially near rural stretches west of I-75 and along US-41 (Tamiami Trail). Tuesday morning is expected to remain cold, though slightly less extreme.

While South Florida rarely experiences prolonged cold, officials note that wind chill values — not just air temperature — increase the risk of cold stress, particularly for people outdoors for extended periods.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit early-morning outdoor exposure, and check on elderly neighbors, outdoor pets, and sensitive plants. Commuters should be prepared for unusually cold conditions at bus stops and train platforms.

This cold snap may be especially noticeable for students, early-shift workers, and overnight commuters, as temperatures will be lowest before sunrise.

The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor updates at weather.gov/miami as the event approaches.
