Louisiana – Frost creeps across lawns and rooftops as the air turns sharply colder, even along the normally mild Gulf Coast. The chill feels out of place, and by this weekend, it becomes dangerous. Cold that starts quietly now will deepen fast, catching many off guard across southeast Louisiana.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning. Wind chills could fall as low as 5 degrees above zero in parts of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. These conditions raise the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone outdoors without proper protection.

Friday stays partly sunny with highs near the upper 50s, but the change arrives quickly. Strong north winds develop during the afternoon, then temperatures drop sharply after sunset. By early Saturday, readings fall into the upper 20s to low 30s around New Orleans, with wind gusts making it feel much colder.

Saturday remains sunny but brisk. Highs struggle into the upper 30s, and winds gust near 30 to 40 mph at times, especially near open areas and elevated roadways like I-10 and the Causeway. Outdoor plans should be limited, and layers are essential.

Saturday night brings the coldest stretch. Clear skies allow temperatures to fall into the mid-20s, with wind chills staying dangerously low. Pipes, pets, and plants are at risk. Residents should wrap exposed plumbing and bring animals indoors.

Sunday offers slow improvement. Sunshine returns, and highs rebound into the mid-40s. The cold eases further Monday as temperatures climb toward the upper 50s, signaling a gradual February warm-up.

Take action now to prepare for the coldest weekend of the season. How low did temperatures drop where you live? Share what you’re feeling across your neighborhood.
