South Carolina – Cold air hangs low across the Upstate this morning, settling into valleys and along quiet roads. The stillness won’t last. A strengthening winter system is lining up, and travel conditions could deteriorate quickly as the weekend approaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning for much of the Upstate, northeast Georgia, and western North Carolina. Snow totals of 4 to 7 inches are possible east of I-26, with 2 to 4 inches elsewhere. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph.

Temperatures climb into the low 40s today, then turn colder again by Friday. Snow may begin Friday evening, with road conditions expected to worsen rapidly as surface temperatures fall into the 20s. Flash freezing is a growing concern once snow begins to accumulate.

Saturday appears to be the most disruptive day. Snow is likely through much of the day, and gusty winds could cause blowing snow and poor visibility. Travel along I-26, U.S. 29, and secondary mountain roads may become difficult or even impassable at times. The Friday evening commute could be impacted first.

Power outages are also possible as heavy, wet snow weighs down tree limbs and lines. Residents should prepare now by charging devices, securing outdoor items, and limiting travel once snow begins.

By Sunday, skies clear, but cold lingers. Untreated roads may remain icy through the morning hours before gradual improvement.

Beyond the weekend, precipitation chances drop. Cold mornings persist early next week before a modest warm-up develops.
