Shreveport, Louisiana – Very cold Arctic air is expected to return to northwest Louisiana and surrounding areas this weekend, bringing sharply colder temperatures and dangerous wind chills beginning Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, a strong cold front will move through the region Friday, ushering in an Arctic air mass that will persist into early next week. Overnight low temperatures are forecast to fall into the teens and lower 20s, with wind chills dropping into the single digits and lower teens Friday night into Saturday morning.

The cold will continue through Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings, with repeated freezes expected. While daytime temperatures may recover slightly, they are forecast to remain well below seasonal averages, increasing the risk of cold-related impacts.

Travel and exposure risks will be highest along major corridors such as Interstate 20, Interstate 49, and U.S. Highway 71, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Motorists stranded or delayed in the cold could face hazardous conditions in a short period of time.

The National Weather Service urges residents to take protective actions ahead of the cold snap, including winterizing homes, insulating exposed pipes, and allowing faucets to drip. Pets should be brought indoors, and residents should check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heating.

Officials also caution against improper use of space heaters and generators, stressing the importance of fire safety during extended cold events.

This cold outbreak is especially relevant for commuters, outdoor workers, students, and vulnerable populations across northwest Louisiana, northeast Texas, and southern Arkansas.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecast updates as the Arctic air settles into the region and to prepare now for multiple cold mornings through early next week.
