Kershaw County, SC – A Columbia man has been arrested after authorities say he allegedly left screws and nails scattered across roads in Elgin, leading to multiple reports of vehicle damage and safety concerns.

According to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO), 38-year-old Michael D. Branham was taken into custody Wednesday morning in connection with several incidents involving the intentional placement of sharp objects on local roadways, particularly in the Elgin Estates area.

Deputies say the case spanned several months as residents continued to report finding screws and nails on neighborhood streets. Investigators credit the local community for providing critical information that led to Branham’s arrest.

“We are better when we work together,” Sheriff Lee Boan said in a statement. “This was a major case that placed significant stress on our community and our deputies. Engaging our citizens proved absolutely beneficial. This case is a perfect example of how crimes can be solved through community involvement.”

The arrest was made with assistance from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Fugitive Apprehension Team.

Officials have not yet released information regarding formal charges or court appearances.
