Indianapolis, IN – Several Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were honored this week for their bravery during a January rescue in which two children were saved from a submerged vehicle.

According to IMPD East District officials, the early-morning emergency occurred at 4000 Pendleton Way, where a vehicle carrying a father and his two young children drove into a retention pond. Without hesitation, five IMPD East District officers entered the icy water to begin the rescue. Working with Lawrence Police Department officers from the shoreline, they successfully pulled all three victims from the sinking car.

While the adult male driver did not survive, IMPD said both children were revived and have since made full recoveries — a result credited to the officers’ “quick thinking, teamwork, and courage under pressure.”

During a recent ceremony, three East District officers received the Medal of Bravery, one was presented the Life Saving Award, and another received a Certificate of Commendation from IMPD Chief Chris Bailey. The honors recognize officers who demonstrate exceptional heroism while facing imminent danger.

IMPD also expressed appreciation for the Lawrence Police Department’s partnership, calling their rapid response “critical to the outcome.”

“These officers showed what it truly means to protect and serve,” the department said in a statement. “Their courage will not be forgotten.”
