Richmond, Virginia – Virginia is now firmly in the core impact zone of a strengthening East Coast winter storm, with a high likelihood of disruptive winter weather arriving Saturday and continuing into Sunday. Travel, utilities, and daily activities could all be affected as confidence increases across much of the Commonwealth.
According to the National Weather Service, much of Virginia is showing an 80% chance of at least moderate winter weather impacts during the Saturday-to-Sunday period. Snow is expected to be the dominant precipitation type, though periods of mixed precipitation remain possible, particularly across southern and eastern sections of the state.
Statewide travel concerns are growing as temperatures remain near or below freezing during the expected window of precipitation. Major corridors including I-95, I-64, I-81, and I-66 could become snow-covered or icy, especially overnight and early Sunday. Virginia Department of Transportation crews are preparing pretreatment operations and urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel once conditions deteriorate.
Residents are encouraged to complete preparations before Saturday, including charging devices, stocking essential supplies, and checking on heating sources. Those with weekend travel plans should closely monitor road conditions and delay trips if possible.
With confidence already high, winter weather advisories or warnings are likely as the event draws closer. Officials stress that impacts may persist into Sunday, with additional updates expected as the storm system evolves.
