Melbourne, Florida – A widespread freeze is expected to impact large portions of Florida and southeast Georgia overnight into Thursday morning, prompting multiple Freeze Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories across the region.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Melbourne and Jacksonville, sub-freezing temperatures ranging from 27 to 30 degrees are forecast between late Wednesday night and 9 a.m. EST Thursday. The coldest conditions are expected in inland and rural areas, though freezing temperatures may extend into some urban corridors.
Freeze Warnings are in effect for much of central Florida, including Inland Volusia, Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake, and Okeechobee counties, covering cities such as Orlando, Deltona, Kissimmee, Sanford, Clermont, and Leesburg. Farther north, Freeze Warnings extend across northeast and northern Florida into southeast Georgia, affecting communities near Gainesville, Ocala, Lake City, Live Oak, Waycross, Jesup, and Brunswick.
A Cold Weather Advisory is also in effect for parts of central Florida, where wind chills could drop as low as 25 degrees during the early morning hours.
Major travel corridors including Interstate 4, Interstate 75, Interstate 95, U.S. Highway 17, and the Florida Turnpike run through affected areas. While icy roads are not expected, prolonged exposure to cold temperatures may impact motorists experiencing breakdowns overnight or early Thursday.
The cold poses a significant threat to sensitive vegetation, agricultural interests, outdoor pets, and unprotected plumbing. Officials warn that frost and freeze conditions could damage crops and burst exposed water pipes. Young children, the elderly, and unhoused individuals are especially vulnerable to prolonged cold exposure.
Residents are urged to bring pets and potted plants indoors, protect tender vegetation, and take steps to insulate or drip outdoor pipes. Wearing layered clothing, hats, and gloves is recommended for anyone outdoors overnight or early Thursday.
Temperatures are expected to rebound later Thursday morning, but additional cold weather headlines may be issued if the cold pattern persists.
