Buffalo, New York – Heavy lake effect snow is expected to significantly disrupt travel across portions of north-central New York through Thursday evening, with accumulations reaching up to 20 inches in the most persistent snow bands.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST Thursday for Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties. The warning covers communities including Fair Haven, Oswego, Watertown, and Lowville, along with major travel corridors such as Interstate 81 and nearby state routes.

Forecasters report that additional snowfall totals of 10 to 20 inches are possible where lake snow bands remain stationary. Snow bands are expected to shift north across Oswego County Wednesday morning, then intensify over Jefferson County by Wednesday afternoon and evening. These areas are likely to see the highest snowfall rates and the most hazardous travel conditions.

Elsewhere, including Northern Cayuga County, little additional accumulation is expected through Wednesday night. However, the lake snow band is forecast to shift south again on Thursday, bringing another round of accumulating snow to previously affected areas.

Travel conditions are expected to be very difficult at times, particularly during the Wednesday evening commute. Snow-covered roads and sharply reduced visibility may develop quickly as narrow but intense snow bands move across the region. Conditions may improve temporarily between snow bands, allowing brief cleanup efforts before additional snowfall redevelops.

Lake effect snow is known for its rapid changes in intensity and location. Drivers are urged to remain alert for sudden whiteout conditions and to adjust travel plans if possible.

The warning remains in effect until Thursday evening, with additional updates expected as snow bands evolve.
