Memphis, Tennessee — A Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect across the Mid-South through late Wednesday morning, creating slick travel conditions along Interstate 40, I-55, and surrounding roadways before another surge of bitter cold arrives this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, freezing fog is reducing visibilities to one-quarter mile or less in some areas early Wednesday. Light glaze ice may form on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads as moisture freezes on contact with cold surfaces. The advisory remains in effect through 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Motorists traveling during the morning commute are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. Officials also advise considering delaying travel until visibility improves, especially along elevated roadways such as I-40, I-55, I-240, and the Hernando de Soto Bridge.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Wednesday as fog lifts. However, the reprieve will be short-lived. Forecast data shows bitterly cold wind chills returning this weekend, with another surge of arctic air moving into the region.
The National Weather Service warns that wind chills will again drop sharply late Friday into the weekend, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Overnight and early morning periods will pose the greatest risk.
Even in dry conditions, extremely cold pavement temperatures can create hazardous travel issues, especially if residual moisture refreezes overnight. Drivers should remain alert for black ice during nighttime and early morning hours.
Residents are encouraged to take cold-weather precautions by protecting pipes, bringing pets indoors, dressing in layers, and checking on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals.
Students, early-shift workers, and overnight commuters should plan for both reduced visibility Wednesday morning and dangerous cold exposure later this week. The National Weather Service advises staying tuned to forecast updates as timing and severity details are refined.
