Springfield, Missouri — A strong cold front is expected to move through southwest Missouri on Friday, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and dangerous cold conditions heading into the weekend, with impacts likely along Interstate 44, U.S. 65, and surrounding roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a brief warm-up early in the week will give way to much colder air as the front passes Friday. Temperatures are forecast to fall rapidly Friday evening, with overnight lows dropping back below zero for many locations by late Friday night into early Saturday.
The five-day outlook shows daytime highs only in the teens and lower 20s Saturday, with morning wind chills making it feel even colder. These conditions increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, especially during overnight and early morning hours.
Travel conditions may deteriorate as temperatures plunge. Extremely cold pavement can worsen traction issues, particularly if any residual moisture is present on roads. Bridges, overpasses, and elevated ramps along I-44, I-49, and U.S. 65 are especially vulnerable during sudden temperature drops.
While widespread snowfall is not highlighted with this system, the National Weather Service warns that cold alone can create hazardous driving conditions, including vehicle performance issues and rapidly forming icy patches. Drivers are encouraged to prepare emergency kits, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and allow extra travel time.
Cold conditions are expected to persist through the weekend before a gradual moderation begins early next week. Until then, residents are urged to protect pipes, bring pets indoors, and check on elderly neighbors and others sensitive to prolonged cold exposure.
Students, early-shift workers, and commuters traveling late Friday night or early Saturday morning should plan for extreme cold and dress appropriately if outdoors for any length of time.
The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring forecast updates as timing and severity details are refined ahead of the weekend.
