Tampa, Florida — A Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory remain in effect across much of west-central and southwest Florida through Thursday morning, bringing freezing temperatures and hazardous wind chills that may impact travel along Interstate 75, Interstate 4, and nearby roadways.

According to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay Area office, the alerts are valid from midnight through 9 a.m. Thursday. A Freeze Warning is in effect for Levy, Citrus, Hernando, Sumter, Polk, Highlands, Hardee, and DeSoto counties, as well as interior portions of Pasco, Hillsborough, and Charlotte counties. A Cold Weather Advisory covers remaining portions of west-central and southwest Florida due to low wind chills.

Forecast lows range from 26 to 44 degrees, with the coldest readings expected inland and north of the Tampa Bay metro. Along major corridors such as I-75, I-4, and I-275, temperatures near or below freezing may lead to icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways during the early morning hours.

Wind chills are expected to fall into the mid-20s to upper 30s, increasing the risk of cold-related exposure, especially for those outdoors overnight or during early commutes. The National Weather Service notes that frost development is likely in several inland areas.

Residents are urged to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes, as prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can cause damage to unprotected plumbing and sensitive vegetation. Drivers should remain alert for slick spots, particularly before sunrise Thursday.

While temperatures are expected to rebound slightly on Friday, forecasters warn that another, potentially colder system could arrive later this weekend.

Students, early-shift workers, and morning commuters should plan for extra travel time Thursday morning and monitor official updates for any changes to warnings or advisories.
