Light snow is possible across western and central Kansas Friday as a fast-moving system crosses the region, with minor travel impacts expected.
According to the National Weather Service office in Dodge City, a quick-moving weather system will move in from Nebraska Friday afternoon, bringing light snow mainly to northern Kansas before spreading south into central portions of the state by Friday evening. Snowfall accumulations are expected to remain under one inch, but brief slick spots could develop on untreated roads.
The highest chances for snow are forecast along and north of major corridors such as I-70, with lighter snow possible farther south toward US-50, US-83, and I-135 as the system moves through. Cities including Hays, Garden City, Dodge City, and Great Bend may see periods of light snow, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Forecasters emphasize that while snowfall totals will be limited, timing could overlap with the Friday evening commute, potentially creating isolated travel slowdowns. Visibility reductions are expected to be minor, but drivers may encounter brief changes in road conditions as snow moves through.
Behind the system, colder air will return Friday night into Saturday morning, with wind chills falling below zero in some areas early Saturday. Any moisture left on road surfaces could refreeze overnight, increasing the risk of slick spots on bridges and overpasses.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to remain cautious, particularly during evening travel, and to monitor updated forecasts in case snow coverage changes. Even light snow can cause localized travel issues when combined with cold temperatures.
No significant winter storm impacts are expected at this time, but residents should stay weather-aware as winter conditions continue across Kansas. Additional updates will be issued if forecast confidence or impacts increase.
