Near-freezing temperatures and unusually cold wind chills are expected across South Florida late this weekend into early next week, raising safety concerns for travelers and residents.

According to the National Weather Service Miami office, an Arctic air mass will continue spreading across the region, with widespread near-freezing or sub-freezing temperatures possible Sunday and Monday mornings. The coldest conditions are expected inland and across southwest Florida, with wind chills dipping into the 20s in several locations.

Forecast wind chills for early Sunday morning include 27°F near Miami and Homestead, 24°F in Immokalee, and near 22°F around Belle Glade and Buckhead Ridge. By Monday morning, temperatures near 32°F are possible in Naples, with upper 20s to low 30s elsewhere away from the coast. These conditions may impact travel along major corridors such as I-95, I-75, and US-1, especially during early morning hours.

While widespread winter precipitation is not expected, the cold poses risks to exposed pipes, sensitive vegetation, pets, and people without adequate heating. Those commuting early or traveling overnight may experience colder-than-normal conditions on bridges and open roadways, particularly in rural and inland areas.

The National Weather Service urges residents to take cold-weather precautions, including dressing in layers, limiting prolonged outdoor exposure, and ensuring pets are brought indoors. Drivers are advised to remain alert for potential vehicle issues related to cold temperatures, such as battery failure.

This level of cold is unusual for South Florida and may affect agriculture, outdoor workers, and those without reliable shelter. Some moderation in temperatures is expected later next week, but residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecasts as the cold event approaches.

Additional updates will be issued as confidence increases in the coldest temperature ranges and impacts.
