Florida’s Big Bend starts the day under a rare and biting chill as cold air settles deep across North Florida. Lawns appear frosted. Car roofs feel icy to the touch. The calm air makes the cold feel heavier than usual.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Freeze Warning remains in effect through mid-morning for the Tallahassee area, with temperatures falling into the upper 20s to near 30 degrees. A Cold Weather Advisory also remains in place as wind chills dip into the 20s across inland communities. The cold is widespread, stretching from coastal counties inland toward the Georgia line.
This level of cold poses real risks in a region unaccustomed to freezing weather. Frost and freeze conditions may damage sensitive vegetation, citrus, and early spring plantings. Unprotected outdoor pipes and irrigation systems could also suffer damage. Residents are urged to cover plants, drip faucets slowly, and bring pets indoors until temperatures rise.
Sunshine helps conditions recover later this morning. Highs rebound into the mid-50s by afternoon, easing immediate impacts. Even so, shaded areas and low-lying spots may remain slick early, especially where frost formed before sunrise.
Cold air lingers into the next morning. Another chilly start arrives early Thursday, though temperatures are expected to stay just above freezing for most neighborhoods. By Friday, the pattern shifts. Milder air moves in ahead of the weekend, with highs climbing toward 60 and beyond.
This cold snap reflects a broader national setup. Arctic air pouring south from a heavily frozen Great Lakes region continues to surge into the Southeast, creating sharp temperature swings late this week.
Protect what you can now. Conditions improve soon, but winter still has a voice. Did you wake up to frost where you live? Share what you’re seeing around Tallahassee.
