Hood River, Oregon – Periods of light freezing rain are expected to impact the Upper Hood River Valley late tonight into Wednesday morning, creating slick travel conditions on untreated roads and sidewalks.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, pockets of freezing rain are forecast from Odell to Parkdale beginning Tuesday night and continuing into early Wednesday. While ice accumulations are expected to be light, even small amounts can significantly increase the risk of slips and vehicle accidents, particularly on elevated and untreated surfaces.

Forecast guidance indicates ice accumulations generally ranging from a trace up to a few hundredths of an inch, with the highest likelihood near Parkdale. Areas along and near Interstate 84, Oregon Route 35, and local valley roads could be impacted during the overnight period and early morning commute.

The National Weather Service emphasized that bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways are especially vulnerable to icing. Sidewalks and parking lots may also become slick, posing hazards for pedestrians, school transportation, and early-morning workers.

Conditions are expected to improve by mid to late Wednesday morning as temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation transitions away from freezing rain. However, isolated slick spots could linger in higher elevations or areas that receive less sunlight.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time if traveling overnight or early Wednesday. Pedestrians should use caution when walking on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways that may appear wet but could be icy.

This freezing rain event is part of an unsettled winter pattern affecting the Columbia River Gorge and nearby valleys, where cold air can become trapped near the surface.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and road condition updates and to be prepared for changing conditions through Wednesday morning.
