Tallahassee, Florida – A Freeze Warning is in effect tonight across portions of the Florida Panhandle, Big Bend, and far southwest Georgia, as a hard freeze threatens widespread impacts to people, pets, plants, and infrastructure.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the 20 to 25 degree range across the warned area. These temperatures are cold enough to cause damage to sensitive vegetation, burst exposed pipes, and create dangerous conditions for those without adequate shelter.
The freeze warning includes communities along major travel corridors such as Interstate 10, U.S. Route 98, U.S. Route 319, U.S. Route 231, and U.S. Route 82. While icy road conditions are not expected to be widespread, the cold temperatures may still affect early-morning commuters, outdoor workers, and agricultural operations.
The National Weather Service urges residents to take protective actions using the “4 Ps”: protect people, pets, plants, and pipes. Residents should bring pets indoors, cover or bring in sensitive plants, and ensure exposed pipes are insulated or allowed to drip to prevent freezing. Those without reliable heating are encouraged to seek warm shelter.
This cold event follows an extended period of unseasonably low temperatures across the Southeast, with this freeze representing one of the coldest nights of the week for the region. Temperatures are expected to gradually moderate after sunrise Wednesday, though another cold night may be possible later this week.
Communities across the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia are advised to remain alert through the overnight hours and early Wednesday morning. Farmers, gardeners, and homeowners should complete protective measures before temperatures drop.
The National Weather Service emphasized that Freeze Warnings indicate a high confidence of damaging cold and should be taken seriously.
