Indianapolis, Indiana – An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for much of central Indiana beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, as dangerously low wind chills threaten travel, outdoor activity, and public safety across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, wind chills as low as minus 20 to minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit are expected through Wednesday morning, creating a risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Areas south of the warning zone are under a Cold Weather Advisory, with wind chills ranging from minus 15 to minus 20 degrees.

The warning and advisory cover communities along major transportation corridors, including Interstate 65, Interstate 70, Interstate 74, and Interstate 465. Officials warn that extreme cold can impact motorists, commercial drivers, and anyone stranded outdoors for extended periods, particularly during overnight and early-morning hours.

The National Weather Service urges residents to wear multiple layers of clothing, including hats and gloves, if traveling or working outdoors. Drivers are encouraged to keep emergency kits in vehicles, as mechanical issues can become more dangerous in extreme cold. Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors, and residents are asked to check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate heating.

The cold weather is part of a larger arctic air mass affecting much of the Midwest and Great Lakes region. While temperatures are expected to gradually moderate later Wednesday, forecasters stress that the most dangerous conditions will occur overnight and during the Wednesday morning commute.

Commuters, students, and early-shift workers should allow extra time, limit exposure, and monitor local updates before traveling.

The National Weather Service emphasized that these conditions are hazardous and urged residents to take the warning seriously until it expires at noon Wednesday.
