Boston, MA – A prolonged stretch of dangerously cold Arctic air continues to grip New England, with the coldest conditions expected to last through Sunday, February 2, impacting communities from Maine to Massachusetts.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, much-below-normal temperatures will persist across the region, with overnight lows falling well below zero in northern Maine and New Hampshire and into the single digits across much of Massachusetts. Wind chills are expected to range from -10°F to -25°F, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

Forecasters say repeated Arctic air surges are preventing meaningful warming, making this one of the longest continuous cold stretches New England has experienced in decades. Daytime highs across interior areas are forecast to remain in the teens, with limited relief even during peak afternoon hours.

Another reinforcing blast of Arctic air is expected to move through late Friday into Saturday, keeping extreme cold locked in place through the weekend. Coastal areas from Boston northward may see slightly higher air temperatures, but strong winds will keep feels-like temperatures well below freezing.

Utility providers across Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts are urging residents to take precautions against frozen pipes and increased energy demand. Emergency officials also warn that prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to frostbite in as little as 15 to 30 minutes under the coldest wind chill conditions.

Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple warm layers, bring pets indoors, check on elderly neighbors, and allow indoor faucets to drip to prevent frozen plumbing. Motorists should also keep emergency winter supplies in their vehicles.
