Hastings, Nebraska – A brief midweek warmup across central Nebraska will give way to colder temperatures and a chance for light snow as the week progresses.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, temperatures are expected to climb into the low 30s to near 50 degrees by Wednesday, offering a temporary break from recent cold conditions. That moderation will be short-lived, as another push of colder air arrives Thursday and Friday, sending highs back into the teens and 20s with overnight lows dropping into the single digits and below zero in some areas.
Along with the colder air, light snow will be possible Thursday and Friday, with the best potential for accumulation north of Interstate 80. While snowfall totals are expected to remain light, generally under one inch, even minor accumulations could create slick conditions due to cold pavement temperatures.
Travel impacts may be most noticeable along Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 281, Highway 34, and Highway 6, particularly during overnight and early morning periods when refreezing is most likely. Motorists are advised to watch for slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and untreated rural roads.
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to remain dry with partly cloudy skies, allowing some snowpack to soften slightly before colder air returns. However, snowmelt is expected to be limited, and refreezing will remain a concern once temperatures fall again late week.
Residents are encouraged to continue winter safety precautions, including dressing in layers, allowing extra travel time, and monitoring updated forecasts as timing and snowfall potential become clearer.
The National Weather Service notes that while this is not expected to be a major snow event, small changes in temperature or track could affect impacts, especially north of I-80.
