Caribou, Maine – Snowfall across northern and central Maine is expected to taper off today, but cold temperatures will remain in place through the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Caribou reports that snow will gradually end throughout the day, with only light flurries possible tonight, mainly across northern Maine. No significant additional accumulation is expected after today, allowing travel conditions to slowly improve.

Despite quieter weather, very cold temperatures will persist. Daytime highs across much of the region are forecast to remain in the teens to lower 20s, with overnight lows frequently falling into the single digits and teens. Wind chills during early morning hours may make conditions feel colder, especially in open and rural areas.

Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Millinocket, Houlton, Bangor, and Machias will continue to feel the effects of the prolonged cold. Motorists traveling along U.S. Route 1, Interstate 95, Route 11, and Route 2 should remain alert for lingering slick spots, particularly overnight as temperatures drop.

Forecasters note that while the remainder of the workweek looks relatively quiet, another snow system is possible this weekend. There remains high uncertainty regarding the track and timing, and residents are advised to stay tuned for updates as confidence increases.

The National Weather Service is asking residents to submit snow reports, including location, time of measurement, and snowfall totals, to help improve forecast accuracy across the region.

Residents are encouraged to continue cold-weather precautions, including dressing in warm layers, bringing pets indoors, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers should allow extra time during early morning commutes when refreezing can occur.

Students, early-shift workers, and those traveling during overnight hours may feel the greatest impacts from the persistent cold.

Forecasters emphasize that while snow is ending today, winter conditions are far from over, and continued monitoring of forecasts is recommended through the upcoming weekend.
