Atlanta, Georgia – Cold temperatures and early morning wind chills are affecting much of north and central Georgia, with chilly conditions expected to persist through the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, wind chills early Tuesday ranged from 0 to 15 degrees, with even colder readings possible in the North Georgia mountains. These conditions are expected to ease after mid-morning, but temperatures will remain below normal for late January.
Forecast guidance shows overnight and early morning lows generally in the 20s across much of the region through the end of the week. While afternoons may moderate slightly, cold air will remain in place, and another reinforcing surge of colder air is expected late Friday into Saturday, extending the chilly pattern into early next week.
Cities including Atlanta, Athens, Marietta, Rome, Macon, Columbus, and Gainesville are expected to see repeated cold mornings, especially along major travel corridors such as Interstate 75, Interstate 85, Interstate 20, Interstate 285, and U.S. Route 78. Motorists traveling before sunrise may notice the cold most acutely, particularly in open or elevated areas.
The National Weather Service notes that hazardous wind chills similar to those experienced Tuesday morning could return later in the week, especially following the arrival of colder air this weekend. While widespread winter precipitation is not currently forecast, the persistent cold may still impact outdoor plans, school routines, and early morning commutes.
Residents are advised to dress warmly, limit prolonged outdoor exposure during the coldest hours, and ensure pets and vulnerable individuals are protected from the cold. Students and young workers commuting early may experience the greatest impacts during morning travel.
Forecasters continue to monitor temperature trends closely as winter conditions remain firmly in place across Georgia heading into the final days of January.
