Charleston, West Virginia – West Virginia faces a 10% to 20% chance of winter storm impacts this weekend, with limited but notable snow potential in some areas as a coastal storm system develops along the East Coast between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a strengthening low-pressure system is expected to track northward offshore of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast coasts this weekend. While the core of the storm is forecast to remain well east of West Virginia, colder air across the Appalachian region could allow light snow or mixed precipitation to reach portions of the state.

Regional probabilities across West Virginia include:

  • Northern West Virginia: 15%–20% chance
  • Eastern Panhandle: 15%–20% chance, especially near higher terrain
  • Central West Virginia: 10%–15% chance
  • Southern And Western Counties: Near 10% chance

Any winter precipitation is most likely late Saturday into Sunday and would favor higher elevations and colder overnight periods. Travel impacts, if they occur, would likely be localized and limited, but slick conditions could develop on mountain roads, bridges, and untreated surfaces.

Major travel routes such as Interstate 79, Interstate 64, and Interstate 81 may see brief periods of reduced visibility or slick pavement, particularly in northern counties and higher terrain.

Forecasters emphasize that confidence remains low, and most of the state is expected to avoid significant impacts. However, small changes in storm track or temperature profiles could slightly increase snow potential in localized areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official forecasts and remain aware of changing conditions. Weekend travelers and mountain-area commuters should use caution during overnight and early morning hours if light snow develops.
