Springfield, Illinois – Dry but cold weather will persist across central Illinois through the weekend, with brisk northwest winds today making already cold conditions feel even harsher.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, daytime high temperatures today are expected to remain in the teens and lower 20s across much of the region, including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign. Northwest winds will increase through the day, with gusts ranging from 20 to 30 mph, adding a sharp bite to the air and pushing wind chills into the single digits at times.
Forecasters note that while no precipitation is expected, the combination of cold temperatures and gusty winds may impact travel comfort, particularly for motorists on exposed roadways. Drivers along major routes such as I-55, I-72, I-74, and I-57 may experience stronger crosswinds, especially in open rural areas.
Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall below zero in some locations tonight, with lows ranging from near -9 to 0 degrees. Cold conditions will continue into midweek, with highs Wednesday expected to reach the upper teens to lower 20s. Thursday and Friday will remain cold as well, with highs generally between 10 and 18 degrees.
Despite the persistent cold, the National Weather Service reports that conditions will remain dry across central Illinois, reducing the risk of snow-covered roads. However, cold pavement temperatures mean any untreated moisture could freeze quickly during overnight and early morning hours.
For commuters, students, and outdoor workers, dressing in layers and limiting prolonged exposure to the wind is advised. Pet owners are also encouraged to ensure animals have adequate protection from the cold.
A modest warming trend is possible heading into the weekend, with highs gradually climbing into the upper teens and lower 20s by Saturday. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecasts as conditions evolve.
