Portland, Maine – A powerful winter storm continues to blanket much of Maine with heavy snow tonight, creating dangerous travel conditions across central, western, and interior portions of the state as the system winds down overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday for a wide stretch of Maine, including interior Waldo, Somerset, Franklin, Oxford, Cumberland, Androscoggin, Kennebec, Lincoln, Knox, and Sagadahoc counties. Storm totals range from 6 to 12 inches across parts of Franklin and Somerset counties, with higher amounts of 9 to 16 inches reported across south-central and southwestern Maine.
Cities impacted include Portland, Augusta, Lewiston, Auburn, Waterville, Skowhegan, Farmington, Rumford, Rockland, Belfast, Brunswick, Bath, and Wiscasset. While additional snowfall overnight is expected to be lighter, even small amounts will continue to accumulate on untreated roads, keeping driving conditions hazardous.
Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and slick secondary streets remain a concern, particularly for anyone traveling late tonight or early Tuesday. Officials urge drivers to delay travel when possible and to carry emergency supplies if travel is unavoidable.
Snow tapers off after midnight, but plowing and cleanup will continue into Tuesday morning. Motorists should expect lingering slick spots and allow extra time for the Tuesday commute as conditions slowly improve.
