Chicago, Illinois – Hazardous travel conditions may develop across the Chicago area tonight through Tuesday afternoon as strong winds create blowing and drifting snow.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, wind gusts are expected to increase to 25 to 35 mph late this evening, initially blowing from the southwest before shifting to the northwest by Tuesday morning. These winds may cause snow to drift across roadways, particularly where deeper snow remains from weekend snowfall.
Forecasters say east–west roadways will be most affected overnight, with impacts shifting to north–south routes Tuesday morning through the afternoon as wind direction changes. Blowing snow may lead to localized poor visibility, snow-covered roads, and sudden hazardous travel conditions, especially in open and rural areas surrounding Chicago.
Temperatures tonight are expected to fall to between 1 below zero and 6 degrees, with minimum wind chills ranging from 10 to 15 degrees below zero. Tuesday’s high temperatures are forecast between 12 and 17 degrees, with morning wind chills near zero or below.
The National Weather Service urges drivers to check road conditions before traveling and be prepared for rapidly changing visibility, particularly during early-morning and midday commutes. These conditions may pose increased challenges for commuters, delivery drivers, and early-shift workers across the metro area.
Cold conditions are expected to persist through the week, with dangerously low wind chills continuing during overnight and morning hours.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and use caution if travel is necessary.
