South Bend, Indiana – Cold temperatures and lake-effect snow are continuing across northern Indiana, creating hazardous travel conditions Tuesday with wind chills near or below zero.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through Tuesday, as below-normal temperatures combine with gusty winds and ongoing snowfall. Areas north of U.S. 6, including South Bend and surrounding communities, are expected to see the greatest impacts.

Forecasters report additional snowfall of 1 to 2 inches Tuesday, primarily from lake-effect bands. Wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph may cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility on open roads and rural stretches. Officials urge drivers to use caution, particularly during morning and evening commutes.

Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to between 3 degrees below zero and zero, with wind chills making it feel colder. Daytime highs Tuesday are forecast to remain in the mid to upper teens, offering little relief from the cold.

Light lake-effect snow may linger into Wednesday, mainly west of U.S. 6, with continued cold conditions. Low temperatures could fall to as cold as 7 degrees below zero overnight into Wednesday morning.

The advisory conditions may be especially impactful for commuters, students, and early-morning workers, as untreated roads and exposed areas may become slick due to drifting snow and refreezing.

Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and monitor local weather updates for changing conditions. Motorists should allow extra travel time and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.
