Charleston, South Carolina – Very cold air sweeping across the Southeast could combine with a developing coastal system to bring winter weather impacts to parts of southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia this weekend. With temperatures expected to plunge 20 to 25 degrees below normal, even light precipitation could create icy conditions by early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, an area of low pressure may form off the Southeast coast, increasing the chance of precipitation across coastal and inland areas. While confidence remains low in timing and totals, forecasters warn that the setup could lead to freezing rain or light snow as early as Saturday night, especially near the I-95 corridor.
Charleston, Savannah, and surrounding counties could see at least minor impacts if moisture overlaps with subfreezing surface temperatures. Wind chills may dip into the teens or single digits in rural inland areas. Elevated winds combined with already frigid air could lead to dangerous conditions overnight into Sunday morning.
Residents should prepare for the possibility of slick roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, and limit travel if icing occurs.
Confidence in this system’s development is still low, but updates are expected as models better resolve track and timing.
