La Crosse, Wisconsin – Bitterly cold conditions are gripping the region this morning, with wind chill values ranging from 25 to 35 degrees below zero, creating a serious risk for frostbite and hypothermia, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say the coldest wind chills will occur through mid- to late morning, with peak impacts expected through about 9 a.m. During this time, frostbite can develop in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin.
Actual air temperatures remain well below zero, and light winds are enough to drive wind chills into the -25 to -35 range across much of western Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota, including the La Crosse area. The National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and ensure all exposed skin is covered if venturing outside.
The dangerous cold also increases the risk of hypothermia, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, outdoor workers, and those without adequate shelter. Pets should be brought indoors, and frequent breaks are recommended for anyone who must be outside for work or travel.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later today as winds ease slightly, though temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages. Additional cold nights are expected this week, keeping wind chill concerns elevated during overnight and early morning hours.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take precautions as extreme cold continues to impact the region.
