South Bend, IN – Lake-effect snow continues to impact the South Bend area this morning, creating difficult travel conditions across northern Indiana as winter weather advisories remain in effect.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, lake-effect snow is affecting favored northwest-flow snow belts, including St. Joseph County, with heavier snowfall rates at times. Forecasters said an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow is possible, with the heaviest amounts near and north of South Bend, extending toward the Michigan state line.
Snow-covered roads and significant reductions in visibility are expected during heavier snow bands. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions over short distances, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and ramps.
The National Weather Service said winter weather warnings and advisories remain in effect through 10 a.m. EST, with snowfall intensity and coverage expected to diminish late this morning into the afternoon as lake-effect bands weaken.
Motorists are urged to drive slowly, increase following distances, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Even as snowfall tapers, slick spots may linger where snow accumulates quickly.
Commuters, students, and early-shift workers traveling during the Monday morning commute should plan for delays, particularly in areas repeatedly impacted by lake-effect snow bands.
Officials emphasized monitoring real-time road conditions through state transportation resources and avoiding unnecessary travel until conditions improve later today.
While the most impactful snow is expected to ease by midday, additional light snow showers may persist into the afternoon in isolated areas.
Further updates will be issued as conditions improve across northern Indiana.
