Springfield, IL – Blowing and drifting snow is expected to impact travel tonight, followed by a prolonged stretch of dangerous cold across central Illinois this week.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, southwest winds increasing to 25–35 mph will develop this evening, causing blowing and drifting snow, especially in open and rural areas. Officials said visibility reductions and slick spots are likely where snow is blown back over roads. Peak travel impacts are expected from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time, as conditions may change quickly over short distances. Snow-covered roads could remain slippery overnight even where plowing has occurred.

Behind the winds, very cold arctic air will settle in for the remainder of the week. The National Weather Service warned of frequently breezy conditions producing subzero wind chills on multiple days. For Springfield, forecast minimum wind chills dip to around -22° Monday, -10° Tuesday, and -14° Wednesday, with additional subzero values expected at times through the weekend.

Daily temperatures will struggle to recover, increasing risks of frostbite, hypothermia, and frozen pipes. Officials recommend dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, limiting time outdoors, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Motorists should keep vehicles winter-ready, including adequate fuel and emergency supplies.

Commuters, students, and overnight workers should plan for slow travel tonight and persistent cold impacts through the week.

The National Weather Service will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve.
