Michigan – light snow drifts off Lake Superior this morning, sweeping across frozen pavement and open stretches of highway. Wind pushes flakes sideways near the shoreline, while the cold bites hard enough to sting exposed skin in seconds.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, lake-effect snow remains possible today, though totals are expected to stay light for most areas. Brief bursts could still reduce visibility, especially northwest of Marquette near Lake Superior. A short-lived Winter Weather Advisory may be issued if snow bands intensify.

The bigger concern is the cold. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through the morning, with wind chills plunging as low as 30 to 35 below zero across central and western Upper Michigan. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes, particularly in windy areas.

In Marquette, Negaunee, and Ishpeming, roads may look manageable at times, but conditions can change quickly. Blowing snow can redeposit on U.S. 41, M-28, and county roads, while any midday melting risks flash freezing after sunset. Drivers should slow down and keep emergency supplies in vehicles.

Snow chances linger into Tuesday and Wednesday, with scattered snow showers possible and minor accumulations at times. Winds ease slightly midweek, but temperatures stay locked in the single digits and teens. Even light snow during cold conditions can create slick travel during the evening hours.

By Thursday and Friday, colder air settles back in, keeping highs near 10 degrees and lows well below zero. Skies trend partly sunny at times, but winter remains firmly in control across the region.

Looking ahead, precipitation chances decrease into early February, though colder-than-normal temperatures persist. Additional weather alerts may be issued if lake-effect snow redevelops.
