Missouri – The air bites hard across the Ozarks as frost stiffens grass and wind slides through quiet streets. Breath turns white instantly. Even short walks feel punishing as extreme cold tightens its grip this morning.
An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across much of southern Missouri through midday. Wind chills as low as 15 to 25 degrees below zero are possible, creating a serious frostbite risk on exposed skin within 30 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, air temperatures dropped well below zero before sunrise. Springfield-Branson National Airport reported readings near -3 degrees, with light winds still driving dangerously cold chills. Snow on the ground limits melting, allowing cold air to linger longer.
Roads appear mostly dry, but danger hides in shaded spots. Limited melting today could refreeze quickly after sunset, creating slick patches on bridges and untreated roads. Drivers should reduce speed and stay alert, especially during the evening commute.
Cold also strains homes and infrastructure. Prolonged freezing raises concerns for burst pipes and failing heaters. Wrap exposed pipes, drip faucets if needed, and keep pets indoors. Portable heaters should be used carefully and never left unattended.
Conditions slowly improve Tuesday as sunshine strengthens. Highs climb toward the lower 30s, easing the worst cold stress. Winds relax, but mornings remain sharply cold.
Midweek brings modest relief. Wednesday turns sunnier with highs in the low 30s. By Thursday and Friday, temperatures fluctuate between the upper 20s and low 30s, still cold enough for refreezing at night.
The broader 6–10 day outlook favors drier weather across the central U.S. Temperatures trend closer to normal late week, while warmer air expands across the Southeast.
Limit time outdoors and dress in layers today. How cold did it feel where you are in the Ozarks this morning?
