New York — Snowflakes whip sideways across parking lots as plows grind through fresh drifts. Visibility drops fast. The air bites exposed skin. Winter has tightened its grip across the Capital Region.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Albany and surrounding areas through this evening. Snow continues to fall steadily this morning, with periods of heavier bands reducing visibility and covering roads quickly. Total snowfall of 15 to 20 inches is possible in parts of eastern New York, especially higher terrain.
Temperatures hover near 10 degrees, keeping snow dry and powdery. That makes drifting easier as winds gust over open areas. Roads remain snow-covered, and travel conditions stay hazardous through the day. Crews continue clearing major routes, but side streets remain difficult.
Snow gradually lightens later today, transitioning to scattered snow showers by evening. Even as snowfall tapers, impacts linger. Cold pavement and packed snow increase the risk of slide-offs and stalled vehicles. Plan extra time if you must travel, and avoid unnecessary trips when possible.
Behind the storm, Arctic air surges in. Tonight turns brutally cold, with lows near zero. Wind chills drop below zero, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors. Exposed pipes and unprotected pets face increased risk.
Tuesday brings some improvement. Skies turn partly sunny, but highs struggle to reach 20 degrees. Any melting during daylight refreezes quickly after sunset, setting up flash freezing on untreated roads and sidewalks.
By Wednesday and Thursday, conditions turn quieter but remain cold. Overnight lows dip into the single digits and near zero again, keeping winter firmly in control.
Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook favors drier weather, though cold air remains dominant across the Northeast.
