Georgia – A thin glaze of ice clings to roads and branches as gusty winds scrape through north Georgia, snapping twigs and rattling power lines. What fell quietly is now locking into place, and conditions remain dangerous.
An Ice Storm Warning remains in effect across much of north and northeast Georgia, including the Atlanta metro, through mid-morning. Refreezing is the main threat now. Even light moisture left behind is turning solid as temperatures hover near freezing and winds strengthen.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, additional ice accumulation remains minimal, but impacts are ongoing. Wind gusts near 30 mph increase the risk of falling limbs, especially where ice weighs down trees. Cold Weather Advisories also remain in effect, with wind chills dropping into the teens.
Major routes including I-75, I-85, I-20, and GA-400 remain slick, particularly on bridges and elevated ramps. Crews continue treating roadways, but shaded areas refreeze quickly. Drivers should delay travel if possible and expect sudden loss of traction.
Atlanta sees temperatures climb into the mid-30s later today, allowing limited melting. That relief will be brief. Clear skies tonight allow temperatures to fall sharply, refreezing any runoff and increasing the flash-freeze risk again. Another cold start follows Tuesday morning.
By midweek, conditions improve. Sunshine dominates Wednesday with highs near the low 40s. Thursday and Friday trend milder, with highs nearing 40 degrees and calmer winds. The broader 6–10 day outlook favors drier weather, with above-normal warmth expanding across the Southeast into early February.
Until then, limit travel, keep flashlights ready, and watch for falling debris. If you’re out this morning, what are road conditions like where you live?
