Massachusetts – Snow falls thick and steady, muffling sound and shrinking visibility as streets disappear beneath fresh accumulation. Plows grind past slowly, and the weight of the storm is already being felt across much of southern New England.
According to the National Weather Service in Norton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through this evening for large portions of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and all of Rhode Island. Heavy snow continues, with widespread totals between 12 and 20 inches expected. Localized amounts of 20 to 24 inches remain possible across parts of northern and western Massachusetts. Visibility drops quickly during heavier bursts, making travel difficult and, at times, dangerous.
Across Boston and surrounding communities, snow-covered roads are slowing traffic along I-93, the Mass Pike, and Route 128. In Providence, similar conditions are unfolding, with slick surfaces and blowing snow reducing visibility along I-95 and local arterials. Officials urge residents to delay all non-essential travel as road crews struggle to keep up during periods of intense snowfall.
As the storm winds down later today, colder air settles in behind it. Temperatures fall quickly after any brief daytime improvement, raising concerns for flash freezing tonight and again by Wednesday morning. Slush that melts during daylight hours may refreeze after sunset, creating hidden ice on untreated roads and sidewalks.
Looking ahead to midweek and late week, skies turn brighter but the cold remains persistent through Friday. Longer-range outlooks point to drier conditions across southern New England, while colder-than-normal temperatures linger even as warmer air builds across the Southeast.
