Corpus Christi, Texas – Rare and dangerous cold is gripping South Texas, putting people, pets, plants, and plumbing at risk as freezing temperatures and bitter wind chills persist through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, Freeze Warnings remain in effect until noon Monday across much of the Coastal Bend, with an Extreme Cold Warning in place from the pre-dawn hours through late morning. Wind chills are expected to dip as low as 7 to 9 degrees above zero, while actual temperatures fall into the upper teens and 20s across inland and coastal communities.
The cold stretches from Corpus Christi, Portland, Ingleside, Flour Bluff, and Port Aransas to inland areas including Alice, Kingsville, Robstown, Beeville, George West, and Laredo. Coastal and island locations such as the Kleberg and Nueces Islands, Aransas Pass, and Rockport face an elevated risk of plant damage and burst pipes due to prolonged exposure to freezing air. Farther inland, Victoria, Goliad, and Cotulla are seeing some of the coldest temperatures, increasing concerns for agriculture and outdoor infrastructure.
Emergency officials warn that frostbite and hypothermia are possible with prolonged exposure, even in areas unaccustomed to cold of this magnitude. Residents are urged to dress in layers, protect tender plants, allow faucets to drip slowly, and bring pets indoors. Space heaters should be used carefully, and grills or generators must never be used inside homes.
Temperatures are expected to improve Monday afternoon, but officials caution that lingering cold impacts may continue. Freeze and Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect through Monday noon.
