Bigbee, Mississippi – Rising water levels along the Tombigbee River are prompting new flooding concerns in Monroe County as minor river flooding develops near Bigbee and surrounding low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Flood Warning is now in effect for the Tombigbee River at Bigbee through Tuesday morning. The river is forecast to rise above flood stage this evening, cresting near 16.3 feet Monday morning before gradually receding early Tuesday.

At last check late Sunday afternoon, the river stage stood at 13.5 feet and continues to climb. Flood stage is 14 feet. Once the river reaches 17 feet, water begins flowing over portions of Hood Road, and widespread agricultural flooding occurs across nearby farmland. Residents along the river and those who use low-lying access roads should prepare for deteriorating conditions overnight.

Communities downstream, including Amory and areas near the Aberdeen Lock and Dam, are also monitoring elevated river levels as runoff continues to move through the basin. While flooding is expected to remain minor, officials caution that water-covered roads may become impassable, especially after dark.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and heed any barricades or closures. Conditions are expected to improve later Tuesday as the river falls below flood stage, but additional updates may be issued if water levels change.
